How to change your NDIS provider

You choose your providers under the NDIS — and you can change them. Here's how to switch smoothly, without a gap in the support you rely on.

Four steps to switching: check your service agreement, line up a new provider, give notice, then hand over — so support keeps running through the change.

You're allowed to change — it's your choice

The NDIS is built on choice and control, and that includes the right to change providers if one isn't the right fit. You don't need the NDIA's permission, and you don't have to give a reason.

The goal is simply to switch without a gap in your support. A little planning makes that straightforward.

Step 1 — check your service agreement

Most providers ask you to sign a service agreement when you start. It usually sets out how much notice you need to give to end the arrangement — often a couple of weeks, but it varies.

Find your agreement and check the notice period and any conditions for ending it. If you can't find it, just ask the provider for a copy.

Step 2 — line up your new provider first

Before you give notice, have your next provider ready to go — that's what prevents a gap in support. Look for someone with genuine availability (not a long waitlist), who covers your area and the support you need.

If your plan is agency-managed, your new provider needs to be NDIS-registered. If it's plan-managed or self-managed, you can choose registered or unregistered providers — a wider field.

Step 3 — give notice, then hand over

Let your current provider know in writing, giving the notice your agreement requires, and confirm a finish date. Keep it simple and polite — you don't owe a detailed explanation.

Where it helps, ask for a short handover so your new provider can pick up where the last one left off. Then let your plan manager (or the NDIA, if agency-managed) know, so invoices go to the right place.

The one rule that saves stress: find your replacement before you give notice. Line up the new provider, confirm they can start, then end the old arrangement — so your support never stops.

Common questions

Do I need a reason to change providers?

No. The NDIS is based on choice and control — you can change providers whenever you like, and you don't have to justify it to anyone.

How much notice do I have to give?

Whatever your service agreement says — often around two weeks, but it varies by provider. Check your agreement, or ask the provider for a copy if you can't find it.

Can I change providers if my plan is agency-managed?

Yes, but your new provider must be registered with the NDIS. If your plan is plan-managed or self-managed, you can use registered or unregistered providers.

Will there be a gap in my support?

There doesn't have to be. Line up your new provider and confirm a start date before you give notice to the old one, so support carries straight over.

This is general information to help you get oriented — not official advice, and everyone’s situation is different. The NDIS is changing, so for the current rules always check ndis.gov.au or talk to your planner, Local Area Coordinator, or support coordinator.
