How much does split system installation cost?
A standard back-to-back install (indoor and outdoor unit on either side of the same wall) is typically $600–$1,200 in labour; with the unit included, a small-room 2.5kW system commonly lands around $1,500–$2,500 installed, and larger 7–8kW systems more. Long pipe runs, double-storey access and electrical upgrades add cost.
What size split system do I need?
As a rough guide: around 2.5kW for a small bedroom, 3.5–5kW for a living room, and 7–9.5kW for large open-plan areas — ceiling height, insulation and sun exposure all shift it. An installer can size it properly; oversizing wastes money and undersizing runs flat out.
Who can legally install a split system?
Refrigerant work requires an ARCtick-licensed technician, and the electrical connection must be done by a licensed electrician. Many installers hold both or work as a team — buying the unit is easy, but the install must be licensed for the warranty to stand.
