Deck Builders — FAQs
How much does decking cost per m²?
Built and installed, a merbau deck typically costs around $250–$400 per m², Australian hardwoods like spotted gum a little more, and composite decking around $350–$500+ per m². Elevated decks, stairs and balustrades add cost. Try our deck cost calculator for a quick estimate.
Timber or composite decking — which is better?
Timber is cheaper upfront and looks natural but needs oiling every year or two; composite costs more but is largely maintenance-free and won't splinter or rot. In full sun composite can run hotter underfoot. Both are excellent when built on a properly engineered subframe.
Do I need a permit to build a deck?
It depends on height and size: low platforms are often exempt, while decks above a set height (commonly around 800mm–1m, varies by state) or attached to the house generally need a building permit and balustrades to code. Your deck builder can confirm and arrange what's needed.
